SFLDC STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF OUR MADRINA, DOLORES HUERTA

Today, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the passing of an icon, our teacher, and our beloved madrina, Dolores Huerta.

She was more than a trailblazer.

Dolores taught generations of working people that we have the power to change our lives. As a co-founder of the United Farm Workers, she organized in the fields, faced down violence, stood up to police batons that nearly killed her, and gave voice to the poor, the immigrant, and the forgotten. She gave us the rallying cry that still guides our struggle: ¡Sí, Se Puede!

To our club and to working families across San Francisco and the nation, Dolores was more than a historic figure. She was our madrina. She walked with us, organized with us, and reminded us that grassroots organizing is about love for our community and fearless courage in the face of power. She showed women, mothers, and young Chicana Latinas what it means to be a woman and that power and leadership belongs to them.

Dolores dedicated every breath of her life to the belief that ordinary working people, when united, can overcome workplace exploitation, corporate power, injustice or political obstacles.

Today she joins her ancestors and what is left for us to do is to honor her memory not just with words, but with our daily work. In her name, we will keep up the fight and the fire going, organizing the fields, the kitchens, the classrooms, and the streets.

We will continue to defend our immigrant neighbors, protect our families, and keep building power for working people.

WE ARE THE POWERFUL AND UNWAVERING COLLECTIVE SHE WANTED TO SEE,

WE ARE THE FORCE SHE MADE POSSIBLE.

GRACIAS, GRACIAS, MIL GRACIAS!

Dolores Huerta Presente!

¡GRACIAS, GRACIAS, MIL GRACIAS!

¡Dolores Huerta, Presente!
